Building or repairing a pool on a Los Angeles hillside is a structural, geotechnical, grading, drainage, and access project before it becomes a finish-selection project. Slope geometry, soil and bedrock, groundwater, retaining conditions, nearby foundations, and construction sequencing determine what is feasible.

Why Hillside Pools Are Different

Site Investigation

Design may require survey information, geotechnical evaluation, structural engineering, and review of existing retaining walls, foundations, utilities, easements, and property lines. The LADBS grading-permit guidance specifically identifies new pool excavation in hillside areas as work reviewed through grading requirements.

Structural Systems

Depending on the site, a pool may use an engineered shell, grade beams, retaining elements, piles or caissons, and independent support designed for soil and seismic loads. The City’s swimming-pool design bulletin distinguishes prescriptive conditions from projects requiring engineered design.

Retaining Walls and Adjacent Structures

Drainage and Waterproofing

Plans should identify deck drainage, subdrains, waterproofing, overflow, plumbing routes, and a lawful non-erosive discharge. Water must not be directed toward slopes, retaining walls, foundations, or adjacent property.

  • Inspection access and testing
  • Weather, erosion, and emergency protection
